What does Non-ECR mean?
Non-ECR means Emigration Check Not Required. It is a passport category for people who meet one or more specified eligibility conditions.
The passport application asks whether you are eligible for the Non-ECR category. If a qualifying category applies to you and you can support it with the required document, you normally select Yes.
I passed Class 10. Should I select Yes?
Normally, yes. Passing Class 10 or a higher educational qualification is one of the main Non-ECR categories.

Applicants aged 15 to 17 who want a full 10-year passport should be able to support a Non-ECR category. That is why this checker asks an extra question for that case.
I have not passed Class 10. Can I still be Non-ECR?
Possibly. Class 10 is only one route. Other categories include certain government-service cases, income-tax payers, professional degree holders, recognised diploma holders, nurses, some seamen, people who have stayed abroad for more than three years, and permanent immigration or resident-document holders.
Select Yes only if a category actually applies to you and you can provide the required proof.
Does a NIL income-tax return make me eligible?
No. Filing a NIL income-tax return by itself does not qualify under the income-tax-payer category.
If you use the tax-payer route, keep the tax assessment or payment proof and the other supporting tax documents required for your case.
Is Non-ECR printed on the passport?
Normally, Non-ECR is not printed as a separate stamp or label. If a current passport does not carry the ECR notation, it is generally treated as Non-ECR.
What documents should I keep ready?
The document depends on the category you are using. For example, education cases normally use a Class 10 or higher pass certificate, age-based cases use age proof, and professional cases use the professional degree certificate.
