What does FPS mean?
FPS means frames per second. A 30 FPS video records about 30 frames every second. A 60 FPS video records about 60 frames every second.
More frames can make motion look smoother or give you more frames for slow motion. It does not automatically mean better image quality.
Should I use 24, 25 or 30 FPS?
24 FPS is a common choice for a cinematic feel. 25 FPS fits naturally into a 50 Hz video and lighting workflow. 30 FPS is a simple general-purpose choice for vlogs, travel and everyday video.
If you already have a project timeline, it is usually easier to record normal-speed clips at the same frame rate instead of converting them later.
When should I use 50 or 60 FPS?
Use 50 or 60 FPS when you want smoother real-time motion, fast action, or mild slow motion.
For example, 60 FPS footage slowed on a 30 FPS timeline can play at about half speed. 50 FPS footage on a 25 FPS timeline can do the same.
When should I use 100 or 120 FPS?
Use 100 or 120 FPS mainly for short clips where strong slow motion is important, such as water, sports action, wildlife movement or fast details.
These frame rates normally need more light and create more data. Do not use them for every shot only because your camera offers them.
What shutter speed should I use?
A useful starting point for natural-looking motion is a shutter speed around twice the frame rate. For example: 24 FPS → about 1/50 sec, 30 FPS → 1/60 sec, 50 FPS → 1/100 sec and 60 FPS → about 1/120 sec.
This is a starting point, not a fixed law. Faster shutter can make action look crisper. Slower shutter adds more motion blur.
Why does indoor light change the recommendation?
Some LED and fluorescent lights flicker with the local power frequency. This can appear as pulsing or horizontal bands in video.
In a 50 Hz environment, 25/50 FPS with shutter speeds such as 1/50 or 1/100 sec are practical starting points. In a 60 Hz environment, 30/60 FPS with 1/60 or 1/120 sec are useful starting points. Some modern cameras also have anti-flicker or variable-shutter controls.
Is higher FPS better in low light?
Usually not. Higher FPS normally goes with a faster shutter speed, so each frame gets less exposure time. That can make the camera raise ISO or produce a darker image.
For night or very low light, start with 24, 25 or 30 FPS unless you truly need smooth action or slow motion.
What FPS should I upload to YouTube?
A good rule is to keep your recording, editing and export frame rates aligned instead of changing frame rate without a reason.
Common online-video frame rates include 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 FPS. If you recorded high FPS only for slow motion, first slow it correctly on your editing timeline and then export at the timeline frame rate.
See a simple example
Suppose you are shooting a normal travel vlog outdoors and you are not sure about the final timeline. A practical starting point is 30 FPS with about 1/60 sec shutter speed.
Now suppose you are shooting sports and want about 2× slow motion in a 50 Hz indoor setup. A practical choice is 50 FPS, edited on a 25 FPS timeline, with about 1/100 sec as a shutter-speed starting point.
Do 23.98, 29.97 and 59.94 change the advice?
No for normal use. Many cameras show or record the fractional versions of 24, 30 and 60 FPS. This selector uses the rounded names because they are easier to understand.
If you are working in a professional broadcast or multi-camera workflow, match the exact project frame rate used by the rest of your production.
