What this calculator assumes: every recorded frame is played once on the timeline. This is the clean slow-motion method used when high-FPS footage is conformed or automatically retimed to a lower-FPS project.
How does this slow-motion calculator work?

The calculator compares the FPS you recorded with the FPS of your editing timeline.

If you recorded more frames per second than the timeline needs, those extra recorded frames can be played one by one over a longer time. That creates smooth frame-based slow motion without inventing extra frames.

What is the slow-motion formula?

Slow-motion factor = recorded FPS ÷ timeline FPS.

Playback speed = timeline FPS ÷ recorded FPS × 100.

Final clip length = original clip length × slow-motion factor.

What happens with 60 FPS on a 30 FPS timeline?

60 ÷ 30 = 2. That means the footage can play about 2× slower when every recorded frame is used.

The playback speed is 50%. A 5-second recorded clip becomes about 10 seconds long.

What happens with 120 FPS on a 24 FPS timeline?

120 ÷ 24 = 5. That gives about 5× slow motion at 20% playback speed.

A 3-second recorded clip becomes about 15 seconds long when every recorded frame is played once.

What about 100 FPS and 50 FPS cameras?

The same calculation works. 100 FPS on a 25 FPS timeline gives 4× slow motion. 50 FPS on a 25 FPS timeline gives 2× slow motion.

That is why 50/100 FPS and 60/120 FPS are both useful frame-rate families. Your camera and project may use one family or the other.

Does putting 60 FPS footage on a 30 FPS timeline automatically make it slow?

Not always. Many editors keep a clip at its normal real-time length unless you retime, conform or interpret it.

This calculator shows the result when every recorded frame is played once at the timeline frame rate. In an editor, use the option that keeps all the original recorded frames for the slow-motion effect.

What shutter speed should I use for slow motion?

A practical starting point for natural motion is a shutter speed around twice the recording FPS. For example, 60 FPS starts around 1/120 sec and 120 FPS starts around 1/240 sec.

This is a starting point, not a fixed rule. Faster shutter gives crisper individual frames but also needs more light.

Why does high-FPS slow motion need more light?

High FPS usually uses a faster shutter speed, so each frame gets less exposure time. The camera may need a wider aperture, more light or higher ISO.

This is one reason not to choose 120 or 240 FPS for every shot. Use high FPS when the slow-motion effect is actually useful.

What if my recorded FPS is lower than my timeline FPS?

You do not have extra recorded frames for natural frame-based slow motion. An editor may duplicate frames, blend frames or create new frames with optical-flow type processing, but that is different from true high-FPS capture.

Do 23.98, 29.97 and 59.94 FPS work too?

For a normal project, keep the exact timeline frame rate consistent with your editing setup.
